In the arid expanses of the Afar region, access to clean water and proper sanitation is not just a convenience—it’s a lifeline. For the Pastoralists and partial Pastoralist Afar community, whose lives revolve around their cattle and seasonal migrations across the desert, water scarcity and poor hygiene pose constant threats to health and survival. AFARDA’s WASH program is designed to meet these challenges head-on, delivering sustainable solutions that ensure clean water, safe sanitation, and hygiene practices become a lasting part of daily life. Our efforts aim to bolster the resilience of this nomadic community, aligning with our broader mission to eradicate poverty and enhance well-being.
Clean Water Supply Projects
The Pastoralists often travel vast distances under scorching sun, with few reliable water sources to sustain them or their livestock. AFARDA addresses this by constructing and rehabilitating boreholes, hand-dug wells, and water storage systems tailored to the region’s harsh conditions. We drill deep boreholes to tap into underground aquifers, equipping them with solar-powered pumps to provide a consistent water supply without relying on scarce fuel. Where boreholes aren’t feasible, we restore traditional wells, lining them with durable materials to prevent collapse and contamination. Water storage tanks—built to withstand the desert heat—are strategically placed along migration routes, ensuring families and their herds have access to clean water year-round. These projects don’t just quench thirst; they reduce the burden on women and children who often spend hours fetching water, freeing them for education and other opportunities.
Sanitation Infrastructure
Sanitation is a critical yet often overlooked need in nomadic communities. AFARDA is changing that by building latrines and promoting hygiene-friendly infrastructure in schools, health posts, and communal gathering points. Our designs are simple yet effective—ventilated pit latrines that require minimal maintenance and suit the Pastoralists’ mobile lifestyle. In schools, we pair latrines with handwashing stations to instill hygiene habits early. We work closely with community leaders to identify high-traffic areas for these facilities, ensuring they’re both accessible and culturally appropriate. By providing these basic yet transformative structures, we aim to curb the spread of waterborne diseases like diarrhea and cholera, which thrive in the absence of proper sanitation.

Hygiene Promotion
Knowledge is as vital as infrastructure in breaking the cycle of illness. AFARDA conducts community-wide awareness campaigns to teach the Pastoralists about handwashing, safe water storage, and sanitation practices. Recognizing their oral storytelling traditions, we use interactive methods—demonstrations, songs, and discussions led by trained local facilitators—to make lessons memorable and relevant. For example, we show families how to use narrow-necked containers to keep water clean and demonstrate the power of soap with hands-on activities. These campaigns reach even the most remote encampments, often timed with seasonal gatherings or market days. Our goal is to empower every household with the tools and understanding to protect their health, turning hygiene into a community-wide priority.

Drought Resilience Projects
The Afar region’s frequent droughts test the endurance of the Pastoralists, threatening both human and animal life. AFARDA’s drought resilience projects focus on sustainable water management to mitigate these devastating effects. We develop rainwater harvesting systems, channeling scarce rainfall into underground cisterns or lined ponds that preserve water for dry seasons. Along migration corridors, we establish small-scale reservoirs that double as livestock watering points, reducing herd losses during droughts. We also train community members in water conservation techniques, such as repairing leaks and prioritizing usage, ensuring every drop counts. By blending traditional knowledge with modern solutions, these initiatives help the Pastoralists weather climate challenges and maintain their way of life.
Through the WASH program, AFARDA is not just providing water and latrines—we’re building a foundation for health, dignity, and resilience. Clean water sustains families and their cattle, the backbone of Pastoralist livelihoods. Sanitation and hygiene reduce preventable diseases, keeping children in school and adults productive. Drought resilience ensures the community can endure the region’s toughest seasons. Every borehole drilled, every latrine built, and every handwashing lesson taught brings us closer to a future where the Pastoralists thrive, unburdened by the daily struggle for basic needs.
