In the vast, rugged expanse of the Afar region, infrastructure is more than bricks and mortar—it’s the foundation for a better life for the Pastoralist and partial Pastoralist Afar community. AFARDA’s Construction & Infrastructure Development program is dedicated to building essential facilities and connections that bridge the gap between isolation and opportunity. From schools to roads, shelters to community hubs, we create durable, practical solutions that respect the nomadic lifestyle while fostering sustainable growth. Our work ensures that even the most remote families can access education, healthcare, and markets, laying the groundwork for a stronger, more resilient Afar region.
School & Health Center Construction
For Pastoralists, education and healthcare are often out of reach, hidden beyond miles of desert or crumbling facilities. AFARDA tackles this by constructing and upgrading schools and health centers in strategic locations. We build classrooms with heat-resistant roofs and wind-resistant walls, paired with sanitation blocks to create safe, welcoming learning environments. Libraries and shaded outdoor spaces encourage curiosity and community gatherings. Health centers rise alongside them—simple yet sturdy structures equipped with examination rooms, medicine storage, and solar panels to power lights and refrigeration for vaccines. These buildings, placed near migration routes or water points, bring vital services closer to nomadic families, ensuring children learn and communities heal without abandoning their way of life.
Roads & Bridges Development
The desert’s sandy trails and seasonal floods cut off Pastoralists from markets, clinics, and schools, turning every journey into a test of endurance. AFARDA enhances connectivity by developing roads and bridges that link remote communities to essential services. We construct gravel roads reinforced to withstand erosion, wide enough for camels and carts yet simple to maintain with local labor. Small bridges span dry riverbeds—known as wadis—that swell during rare rains, ensuring year-round access. These pathways, planned with input from elders who know the land’s rhythms, shorten travel times and open trade routes, weaving isolated encampments into the fabric of the broader Afar region.

Shelter & Housing for Vulnerable Groups
Displacement from drought, conflict, or hardship leaves some Pastoralist families without even the basic shelter of a traditional dome-shaped hut. AFARDA responds by constructing homes for vulnerable groups—widows, orphans, and the elderly—using locally sourced materials like wood and thatch, blended with durable concrete bases to resist wind and wear. These modest shelters feature shaded verandas for resting and small fenced areas for goats, reflecting the Pastoralist lifestyle. We prioritize marginalized communities, working with them to design homes that offer dignity and security. Each house stands as a symbol of stability, giving families a place to rebuild their lives in the harsh desert landscape.

Public Facilities
Community spaces are rare in the nomadic expanse, yet they’re vital for fostering connection and growth. AFARDA establishes public facilities like community centers, youth centers, and women empowerment hubs to serve as anchors for Pastoralist life. Community centers—open, airy structures with benches and meeting areas—host trainings, markets, and celebrations, strengthening social bonds. Youth centers offer tools and workshops for skills like carpentry or digital literacy, sparking ambition among the next generation. Women empowerment hubs provide safe havens for crafting, learning, and leadership, with childcare corners so mothers can participate. Built with local input and materials, these facilities become hubs of hope and activity, tailored to the rhythms of Afar life.
Through this program, AFARDA is constructing more than buildings—we’re building pathways out of poverty for the Pastoralist community. Schools and health centers deliver education and care where they’re needed most, while roads and bridges connect isolated families to opportunity. Shelters offer refuge to the vulnerable, and public facilities nurture community spirit and empowerment. Every classroom raised, every road graded, and every hub opened strengthens the Afar region’s resilience, ensuring the Pastoralists can maintain their traditions while embracing a sustainable future.
