In the arid Afar region, where the Pastoralist and partial Pastoralist Afar community depend on their livestock and scarce resources for survival, agriculture is both a lifeline and a challenge. AFARDA’s Agriculture program is designed to bolster food security and promote sustainable farming practices that honor the nomadic traditions of the Pastoralists while adapting to the harsh desert environment. By improving livestock health, introducing climate-smart crops, and empowering the community with knowledge and tools, we aim to transform agriculture into a source of strength and stability, ensuring the Pastoralists thrive even in the face of drought and change.
Pastoral & Agro-Pastoral Development
Livestock—camels, goats, and cattle—are the heartbeat of Pastoralist life, providing food, income, and cultural identity. AFARDA enhances this vital resource by improving livestock health and grazing practices. We establish mobile veterinary clinics that travel with the herds, offering vaccinations, parasite control, and treatment for common ailments. To combat fodder shortages during dry seasons, we support community-led fodder production, teaching Pastoralists to grow drought-tolerant grasses like Sudan grass in small plots near water points. Sustainable grazing practices—such as rotational pastures guided by elders’ traditional knowledge—prevent overgrazing and preserve the fragile desert ecosystem. These efforts ensure healthier herds and more reliable livelihoods, blending modern science with the Pastoralists’ deep-rooted expertise.
Climate-Smart Agriculture
The Afar region’s relentless heat and unpredictable rains make traditional farming a gamble. AFARDA introduces climate-smart agriculture to turn the odds in the Pastoralists’ favor. We promote drought-resistant crops like sorghum, millet, and cowpeas, which thrive in arid conditions and provide nutritious food for families and fodder for livestock. Modern techniques—such as mulching to retain soil moisture and intercropping to maximize land use—are taught through hands-on demonstrations. These methods reduce reliance on erratic rainfall and help Pastoralists diversify beyond livestock, building resilience against climate shocks. Every harvest from these hardy crops is a step toward food security and independence.

Irrigation & Water Management
Water is scarce in the desert, but AFARDA makes it work harder for the Pastoralists through small-scale irrigation and water management schemes. We construct shallow wells and micro-dams along seasonal riverbeds, channeling water into simple drip irrigation systems that nourish small vegetable gardens or crop patches. These systems are low-cost and easy to maintain, designed with input from the community to fit their mobile lifestyle. We also install rainwater harvesting structures—lined pits or tanks—to capture rare downpours, storing water for dry spells. By ensuring year-round agricultural productivity, these projects give Pastoralists a steady supply of food and income, even when the rains fail.

Agricultural Cooperatives
Strength lies in unity, and AFARDA fosters this through agricultural cooperatives that empower Pastoralists to work together. Knowledge is the seed of progress, and AFARDA cultivates it through hands-on training for Pastoralists and farmers. We educate them on modern agricultural techniques—like soil conservation, pest management, and efficient water use—tailored to the desert’s demands. Training sessions are held in the field, often at watering points or grazing areas, using practical examples like planting a drought-resistant seedling or treating a sick goat. We also teach resource management skills, such as budgeting profits from milk sales or planning pasture rotation, to ensure long-term sustainability. By equipping the community with these tools, we empower them to innovate and adapt, turning challenges into opportunities.
Through this Agriculture program, AFARDA is planting the roots of a stronger, more self-reliant Pastoralist community. Healthier livestock and sustainable grazing secure their traditional way of life, while climate-smart crops and irrigation bring new sources of food and income. Cooperatives unite families in shared prosperity, and training ensures these gains endure.
