About Us
Afar Development Association (AFDA) is membership based, indigenous, non-for-profit local non-governmental organization established in July 2011. AfDA is legally registered in Ethiopian charities and society’s proclamation no. 621/2009 under a registration license # 2488 in October 2011. In 2019, AfDA re-registered with the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia Agency for Civil Society Organization Proclamation No.1113/2019 with registration no. 2488 fulfilling all requirements demanded by the agency. AfDA is also a general assembly member of the civil society council in Ethiopia.
The head office of AFDA is located in Samara, the capital of Afar National Regional state, some 570km east of Addis Ababa. AfDA, as a societal membership based development organization, its structure extends to development committees in 36 woredas and 6 town administration of the region. AfDA currently has more than 55,000 individual members at Regional & Woreda level and 45 corporate members.

Vision
To see the Pastoralists and partial Pastoralist Afar community liberated from poverty and backwardness, leading a stable and peaceful life.
Mission
AFARDA aims to become a strong community development organization, ensuring the progress of the Pastoralist community, particularly through education, skills training, healthcare, and water and sanitation management. By mobilizing resources from community members, supporters, and donors, AFARDA works to combat poverty through development programs, enhance community participation, and strengthen institutions.

To eradicate poverty from the Pastoralists and partial Pastoralist Afar community and the Afar region as a whole.

Improving healthcare access by providing essential medical services, maternal care, disease prevention, and emergency response to ensure the well-being of the Afar community.
Wash
Enhancing access to clean water, sanitation, and hygiene education through sustainable solutions, reducing waterborne diseases, and promoting healthy living.
Education
Empowering the next generation by building schools, providing learning materials, supporting teachers, and ensuring access to quality education for all, especially girls and pastoral communities.
Agriculture
Promoting sustainable farming, irrigation, and livestock management to enhance food security, improve livelihoods, and build climate resilience among pastoralist communities.
Livelihood
Creating economic opportunities through skills training, entrepreneurship support, and income-generating projects to uplift communities and reduce poverty.
Construction
Developing essential infrastructure, including schools, health centers, roads, and shelters, to improve accessibility, education, and healthcare services in Afar.
Environmental Protection
Conserving natural resources through afforestation, climate change adaptation, and sustainable practices to protect the environment and promote eco-friendly development.
